Invisible Movie Season

Note: These are the last flicks I got to see before the Great American Lockdown. I'll be back when civilization re-opens.--KC

INVISIBLE MAN
HORROR

PLOT:    Woman flees her rich, brilliant scientist husband.

Cecilia (Elisabeth Moss) escapes her beautiful home and wealthy but abusive husband, Adrian (Oliver Jackson Cohen) only to believe he is stalking her for he has made a device where no one can see him.  It is an updated version of The Invisible Man with psychological terror mixed with domestic violence elements.  Moss is good as the wife.  Her friends are Emily, (Harriet Dryer)) her strong, sassy sister, James (Aldis Hodge) and his daughter Sydney (Storm Reid) who question her sanity as she constantly blames her husband Adrian for her troubles.  It is slow moving for it is building tension and there is a plot twist.

ONWARD
ANIMATED

PLOT:    Two brothers want to see their dead father again and they begin a fantasy journey.

Ian Lightfoot (Tom Holland) is an elf but in his world magic is not important like ordinary life.  He realizes he has powers thanks to his brother Barley (Chris Pratt) who is a loud daredevil.  Together they seek a diamond to bring their father back to life.  They find out they really care about each other and that they need each other to succeed.  It is very good and it does ask the question What would you do to see your love ones once again?  It is well done.

BLOOD SHOT
SUPERHERO/ACTION

PLOT:    Based on the Valiant comic book.

Everybody knows Marvel and DC comics but there are other comic book companies and one is named Valiant.  Bloodshot is one of the very popular ones.  I never read the comic so I am reviewing it on the movie alone.  Ray Garrison (Vin Diesel) is elite soldier who survives an experiment by Dr. Emil Harting (Guy Pearce) where his blood is replaced by nanites which makes his stronger and indestructible.  He finds out bad things along with his newfound powers.  Other soldiers are like him who include Katie (Eiza Gonzales) and Jimmy Dalton (Sam Heughan) who is a really bad guy.  What is good:  Vin Diesel, the special effects and the action sequences.  The bad: You have seen good solider turn into a killing machine many times before.

THE HUNT
THRILLER

PLOT:    12 strangers release in the woods to be slaughtered like animals.

The movie is as interesting as the back story.  It was suppose to be release in September 2019 but cancelled because of the shooting in Texas.  It is bloody, messy and funny.  It is like The Most Dangerous Game upgraded.  What is great is the action and the lead is a tough female named Crystal (Betty Gilpin who stars in Glow).  Also starring is Athena (Hilary Swank, Oscar winner).  It is a great B-movie with social commentary.

TROLLS WORLD TOUR
ANIMATED

PLOT:    Poppy and Branch go on a new adventure.

Poppy (Anna Kendrick) is now queen and Branch (Justin Timberlake) wants to confess his love to her but is stopped for Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom) of rock  who wants to steal the five strings that include  classic, country, soul, techno and pop so only rock rules.  Poppy and Branch must stop her. The film is delightful for the wonderful characters and lots of songs that many people know.  It is a great sequel.  The movie is about you can be different and come together especially in music.

MY SPY
ACTION/COMEDY

PLOT:    CIA agent must surveillance a mom and her daughter.

JJ (Dave Bautista) is a tough, brutal operative who is demoted for being too aggressive and now has to keep an eye on a mom and daughter whose uncle is a terrorist.  Sophie(Chloe Coleman) is a cute but smart nine year old who finds out who JJ really is and blackmails him a lot for she is alone most of the time for she has no friends and her mother works as a nurse. Sophie is bratty at first but she comes around and JJ enjoys things that normal people do like eating ice-cream and skating.  You have seen the tough guy turns to mush with adorable kid or kids before but it does get action-packed near the end.   If you like ex-wrestler Bautista funny parts and action you will like this.

Boys, Hogs and Broken Hearts

SONIC THE HEDEGHOG
ACTION/FANTASY

PLOT:    Based on the popular video game from Sega.

Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) is a fast, blue hedgehog from another planet who loves earth-especially where he landed at Green Hills, Montana. Tom (James Marsden) is a cop who is tired of his small town.  Sonic and Tom meet and become friends after Sonic causes a big blackout and the government sends Dr. Ivo Robotnick (Jim Carrey) who is a goofy, genius villain who wants Sonic to dissect him.  The movie is funny, cute and heartwarming.  It is one of the better video games turned into a movie.

THE PHOTOGRAPH
ROMANCE/DRAMA

PLOT:    Two successful black but broken people want to date.

Michael (Lakeith Stanfield) is a hard working writer but wants more and Mae (Issa Rae) finds out about her ambitious mother Christina (Chante Adams) who wanted to be a photographer in New York.  Both don’t have a great record of staying with their partners but they try to stay together.  Love is complicated and it shows on screen for it slow for some boring for others but emotional packed –not action packed.  The two best actors in the movie are Chante Adams and Lil Rel Howery who is very funny.  It is great for black couples who want to see black love on screen for a change.

BRAHMS THE BOY 2
HORROR

PLOT:    Sequel to the The Boy.

Liza (Katie Holmes) has a husband and a young child named Jude (Christopher Convery).  They are a happy family until two burglars attack Liza and Jude saw the entire thing.  They move to the Heelshire house and Jude finds Brahms, the creepy doll.  OMG!  The movie is shorter but still feels so long for nothing happens.  There are a few jump scares but it is very boring.  I did not even know this was released!  This should have been direct-to-video!
